Border security has been stepped up after a temporary protection zone in north Monaghan was imposed over a new suspected case of foot-and-mouth in the North.

The suspect case was discovered at a slaughterhouse in Dungannon in Co Tyrone. It had been sent there from a farm near Augher, close to the Co Monaghan border.

The case is described by Northern authorities as a "hot suspect". Test results on the animal are expected later today.

The Department of Agriculture is awaiting confirmation of the suspected outbreak before declaring a full exclusion zone in an area centring around Emyvale.

A Garda spokesman said the measures are precautionary.
