Books of evidence served on five over sex charges

Books of evidence have been served on five men accused of sexual assaults on a young girl.

Books of evidence have been served on five men accused of sexual assaults on a young girl.

Judge Desmond Zaidan adjourned the case yesterday for a month on the application of the defence.

Paudge Dorrian, solicitor for three of the men, said "certain issues" would be arising on which he would be seeking legal advice.

Garda Liam Feeney gave formal evidence at Ballyshannon District Court of serving the books of evidence one hour and 20 minutes before the case was called.

Judge Zaidan told members of the press in court that because of the nature of the charges against the men, no details could be reported that would identify the alleged victim.

At the request of solicitor Patsy Gallagher, representing two of the accused, the judge also continued the order of a previous court barring publication of identification of the defendants.

The five face a total of 19 charges of sexual assault on the girl on dates between July 1st and November 30th, 2003.

An earlier hearing was told the girl was a minor at the time and is still a minor.

The judge said he would be anxious to move the case on when it comes before him in Donegal town on April 4th.

Judge Zaidan remanded the five defendants on continuing bail.
