At least 14 people were killed and 69 wounded when rebels fired mortar shells in Bogota and the presidential palace as Mr Alvaro Uribe was sworn in as president of Colombia.

Three explosions were several blocks from parliament yesterday as Mr Uribe, who has vowed to crack down on the rebels, entered the building to take the oath of office from Senate leader Mr Luis Alfredo Ramos.

Two mortars also went off beside the nearby presidential palace, wounding a policeman.
