The youngest survivor of the IRA's Manchester bomb attack was safe and well in hospital yesterday after her birth.

Three day old Kay Leigh Roseanne Russell, who was in the womb when her mother, Melanie (23), was thrown 15 feet into a bollard by the blast, was born safely last Friday, her grandmother said.

Relieved to be able to cuddle her 6 lb 15 Oz first granddaughter, Ms Linda Russell (40) said: "It's a miracle. We're all delighted that she's been born safe."

Ms Russell had suffered a lot of pain after the blast so doctors at Fairfield Hospital in Bury, Greater Manchester, had delivered the baby by Caesarean section 10 days early.

Ms Russell, from Heywood, Greater Manchester, who suffers from epilepsy, had been plagued by problems through out her pregnancy even before the bomb but hospital staff had been brilliant," her mother said.

"They all know her and know what she's been through. They've even given her a private room.

Melanie was "very tired and sore" but she and her partner Mr Michael Kilpatrick (24) were looking forward to bringing Kay Leigh home tomorrow.
