Cape Town - The South African government's theft and fraud case against a former anti-apartheid campaigner, the Rev Allan Boesak, started to crumble yesterday as the key state witness against him admitted lying.

Mr Freddie Steenkamp, the book-keeper for Mr Boesak's Foundation for Peace and Justice who was jailed last year for stealing nearly one million rand (about £105,400) from the organisation, told Cape Town's High Court he had been wrong in implicating Mr Boesak, a court official said.
