Gardaí in Sligo have ruled out foul play in the death of a four-year-old Romanian boy whose body was taken from the Garavogue river on Wednesday night.

A post-mortem examination carried out at Sligo General Hospital yesterday by the Assistant State Pathologist, Dr Marie Cassidy, found that Jacob Daniel Cheregi died by drowning.

The boy's parents reported him missing to gardaí after 9.30 p.m. on Wednesday. At about the same time, gardaí received a report of a child's body being seen in the water close to Quay Street car-park near the centre of the town.

It is believed that the family were living in a caravan close to where the boy was found and they had only been in the Sligo area for a short time.
