Water rationing on Achill Island
Visitors to Achill Island in Mayo were without an adequate supply of water on the busiest weekends of the tourist season. Water was rationed throughout the island over the bank holiday weekend.
Local Fine Gael councillor Mr Pat Kilbane said a new one million gallon reservoir was under construction. "It will be the middle of next year before the reservoir is completed and in the meantime, the council has no choice but to ration supplies.
"Water is switched on and off for different periods across the island to try to meet a huge increase in demand during the month of August."
Usually just under 4,000 people live on Achill Island but during the summer, that number rises to 7,000 people.
Windfarm project refused permission
Mayo County Council has rejected plans for a major windfarm comprising 51 turbines spread over a number of isolated townlands near Bangor Erris.
Grounds for the refusal of planning permission to Saorgus Energy, Killarney, Co Kerry, include injury to the landscape, depreciation of existing property and breach of the Mayo Development Plan (1992).
Other reasons for rejection include the potential impact of the development on the Bangor Erris bog complex and the Tullaghan Bay area which are designated Natural Heritage Areas.
Businesses to sue over power losses
Three business owners on Achill Island in Co Mayo are to seek compensation from the ESB because of power cuts on the island over the bank holiday weekend. Two restaurant owners and a shopkeeper are to issue proceedings for damage to stock and equipment because of the power cuts.
Keel in Achill was without power for five hours on Friday last while the area was without power for almost eight hours on Monday. This also prevented people from watching Mayo play against Cork in Monday's All-Ireland Football quarter final.
An ESB spokesman said a fault developed in a transformer and it took several hours to fix.
