The body of an 83-year-old man missing since Saturday has been taken from the River Camlin near Longford town.

The man was last seen walking on the river bank at Walter Street on Saturday. The river was high, and the flood plain to the west of the town was flooded at the time.

Divers from Lough Ree and Longford sub-aqua clubs have been taking part in the search. The man's body was found at about 9am today.

The Camlin recently burst its banks in a number of places after heavy rains, and hundreds of acres of farmland were left underwater.

The river is a tributary of the river Shannon and flows into the larger river at Tarmonbarry, just a few miles further downstream.
