The two "black boxes" from the commercial jet airliner that demolished the west end of the Pentagon were found early today, the Pentagon announced.

Workers searching crash debris discovered the flight data recorder and the voice data recorder, Pentagon spokesman Mr Don Sewell told AFP.

The pinging sounds from the recorders were detected in the rubble late Wednesday and again yesterday, according to workers at the site.

The cockpit voice and data recorders would shed light on the last minutes of American Airlines flight 77 before it slammed into the west side of the Pentagon on Tuesday.

The attack killed up to 250 people, including the 64 people on the plane, said US Defense Secretary Mr Donald Rumsfeld.
