Belgium:A Belgian man appeared in court yesterday following the gruesome discovery of the bodies of his dead wife and stepson in the freezer by a guest at his dinner party.

Prosecutors asked the court to remand Didier Charron (43) in custody while they continued investigating the macabre circumstances of the discovery on Tuesday night.

Mr Charron was arrested after a dinner guest fled his house when she discovered the two bodies while she put away the leftovers from the meal she had just eaten.

"She went to the freezer and that is what she saw. She then alerted the police," said Georges Lahaye of the local public prosecutors' office.

Prosecutors want the suspect to be remanded in custody to allow more time for an investigation into the deaths.

Mr Lahaye said the suspect had not made a confession. He also indicated that Mr Charron, who lived in the town of Verviers in eastern Belgium, had argued a lot with his wife Chantal (46) in the past.

She had announced her intention to get a divorce a few weeks ago, according to some media reports of the circumstances of the murder.

The bodies of Chantal and Mr Charron's stepson Bryan (11) had stab wounds.

A neighbour told La Dernière Heure: "I knew him very well. Didier is a very violent man, especially when he has had a drink when he is no longer master of his words or behaviour.

"Even if this drama is terrible it could have happened earlier. For my part I have warned the police on a number of occasions following aggressive behaviour towards me and my son.

"I sometimes had contact with Bryan and Chantal. They explained to me their fears and their feeling at being at the end of their tether.

"I cannot find words to describe my sadness and disgust."

Another neighbour said: "People told me that the victim had three other children.

"Even if I don't know them my thoughts and prayers are with them."

The dinner guest, who made the gruesome discovery, is receiving counselling from psychologists and victim support officers after making the discovery.
