Beaumont Hospital in Dublin has urged people to avoid all non-essential visits due to an outbreak of norovirus, commonly called the “winter vomiting bug”.
The hospital said about 40 patients had symptoms of the virus, which include severe abdominal cramps, vomiting and diarrhoea. Thirteen of these have become ill since Monday.
Some 28 beds have been closed in affected wards. The hospital has said only one visitor per patient can be permitted and only between 2pm and 4pm, and 6pm and 8pm. Children are not allowed to visit.
The numbers of elective and day case procedures today are being limited. Outpatient appointments are not affected.
