Almost £800 million was added yesterday to the stock market value of AIB and Bank of Ireland, with share demand driving both banks up more than 5 per cent to record prices. AIB hit a milestone when its stock market value rose above £6 billion. Its share price jumped 54p to 732p. At that closing price, AIB's market value is £6.25 billion.

The value of AIB shares rose by £460 million. A 60p gain by Bank of Ireland to £11.50 increased its stock market value yesterday by more than £300 million to almost £5.9 billion.
