Activity in the Bangladeshi capital came to a near-halt today and activists battled police during a one-day strike called to denounce the killing of two opposition politicians.

There have been widespread protests since two politicians from the opposition Awami League were shot dead by unidentified gunmen on Monday in separate incidents in southern Khulna and Dhaka.

Hundreds of Awami members marched through the streets in Dhaka tody, chanting demands for an end to lawlessness and for those who killed politicians Manzurul Imam and Mozammel Haque to be brought to justice.

At least seven women were injured in clashes with police as they tried to break through a barbed-wire barricade in Dhaka.
