The residents of Ballinrobe, Co Mayo have reason to celebrate today as their local Community School has produced the highest-achieving student in this year’s Leaving Certificate.

Emer McGrath from Ballynew, who celebrated her 18th birthday only two weeks ago, was "delighted" today when she got her results: 8 A1s and 1 A2. "They are so much better than I ever even dreamed of," she said.

Emer, whose favourite subjects are maths and physics, now plans to study Theoretical Physics at Trinity College, Dublin. A multi-talented teenager, she is an accomplished pianist, having reached Grade 8.

Her school principal, Mr Louis O’Malley, said the whole school was extremely pleased with Emer’s success.
