Around 3,000 households in the North were without electricity today following a night of high winds that brought down power lines across Northern Ireland.

North Antrim and East Co Derry were the worst affected. Northern Ireland Electricity (NIE) say around 1,000 homes have had power restored this morning after a night in which winds gusting up 65 m.p.h caused damage to pylons, poles and other equipment.

A fire at a substation is also disrupting supplies to 700 customers in the Omagh area, the company confirmed.

Helicopters and additional engineers have been deployed to make repairs throughout the morning.

"We are already in position to get customers back on supply as quickly as humanly possible consistent with safety," Mr Robin Greer, NIE's Communications Manager, said.

The adverse weather has also caused Stena to suspended sailings between Belfast and Stranraer, while the Seacat service has also been disrupted.

Winds are expected to ease tonight but the Met Office in Northern Ireland have warned that snow showers and sub-zero temperatures could lead to hazardous road conditions.

By about 5 p.m., electricity had been restored to all but 300 homes in the North and it was hoped that they would be back on power before the end of the evening.
