THE BODY of a man discovered in Government Buildings last Christmas was that of an Army corporal who took his own life, an inquest in Dublin has heard.
The corporal was on duty with the military police in Government Buildings on December 27th, 2010, when he took his life.
The father of two was not rostered to work that day but had registered for duty at 5.30pm to give one of his colleagues time off.
At about 11.30pm Cpl Paul Quigley noticed the man’s office light was on and went to see what he was doing. There he discovered the body.
The wife of the deceased told the inquest her husband had never shown suicidal tendencies or indicated he wished to harm himself.
His co-workers told the court they had noticed nothing unusual about him on the day of his death.
Deputy State Pathologist Dr Michael Curtis, who conducted the postmortem, gave the cause of death as a gunshot wound to the head.
Returning a verdict of death by suicide, the jury of four women and three men recommended that regular contact and communication be maintained between members of the military police on duty after handguns are issued.
