Buenos Aires - Argentina's highest court yesterday halted a flood of lawsuits against banks by angry account holders claiming limits on cash withdrawals were unconstitutional.

The Supreme Court overturned a lower court's decision that ordered a bank to give one account holder access to his $200,000 (€227,300) in deposits. The high court ruling was expected to stop further attempts to circumvent the partial freeze on accounts. Under the limits, imposed December 3rd by the government of the former president, Mr Fernando de la Rua, account holders can withdraw up to $1,000 a month in cash.
