A frail 68-year-old man listened intently in court yesterday as his lawyers argued that he was wrongly convicted of the sensational murder of a judge's daughter nearly 50 years ago.

Iain Hay Gordon, from Glasgow, was found guilty but insane of the brutal slaying of Miss Patricia Curran (19) in 1952 on the shores of Belfast Lough. Gordon's lawyer, Sir Louis Blom-Cooper QC, yesterday launched a blistering attack on the legal team at the 1953 trial.

He went on to accuse Scotland Yard Supt John Capstick, the man brought over to head the investigation, of lying at Gordon's trial. The appeal continues today.
