Improved water safety awareness over the long weekend has been called for by the the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, which endorses a similar plea by the coast guard.
Mr John Browne, Minister of State at the Department said: "Water safety must always be paramount in the thoughts and actions of all those engaging in water-based leisure pursuits."
With a large increase expected in water activity this bank holiday weekend, Mr Browne also announced details of a comprehensive radio campaign, which will broadcast over 500 advertisements on regional and national news stations to cover all aspects of water safety.
"I would call upon everyone to exercise the utmost caution and to always play safe," added Mr Browne.
The coast guard appeals to people using the beach, lakes and rivers to read signs carefully, only to swim where there are lifeguards and to obey instructions.
It calls on people in watersports to use thermal protection to avoid hypothermia.
It also cautions parents to constantly supervise children near water.
The coast guard also asks for the prohibition of inflatable airbeds and dinghies in the sea or open water, and asks anyone using water equipment to know their own and the craft's capabilities and limitations.
It also asks users of fast powerboats and jet-skis to keep clear of swimming areas and other small crafts and advises hill or cliff walkers to wear proper clothing and footwear.
