Anti-nuclear bongo-drum playing protesters in white boiler suits and dust masks added some colour to Limerick's O'Connell Street yesterday, writes Eibhir Mulqueen.

The 20 protesters, including a brother from Glenstal Abbey, were publicising this weekend's trip to the Faslane naval base in Scotland where Britain's four Trident nuclear missile submarines are based.

"There are people gathering from all over the world on Monday for the Big Blockade. It is an attempt to block the entrance as workers come in for the morning change of shift," Brother Anthony Keane said.

More than 50 people are expected to travel from the Limerick region, according to Ms Nancy Serrano, the spokeswoman for the University of Limerick students at yesterday's demonstration.
