The importance of remembering the history of all the people of this island, from all traditions, was emphasised yesterday by Taoiseach Bertie Ahern when he unveiled a commemorative stamp to mark the 90th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme.

The stamp is a copy of The Battle of the Somme - Attack of the Ulster Division by JP Beadle, which depicts the fighting on the first day of the battle - July 1st, 1916.

"The commemorative stamp is part of an overall programme that reflects the shared history and shared experience of the people of this island, from all traditions, in the year of 1916," Mr Ahern said.

"The Battle of the Somme saw many young Irish men tragically lose their lives. It is fitting that their sacrifice is remembered, and this commemorative stamp, along with the planned State commemoration at Islandbridge on July 1st, is part of that.

"It is important that the history of all of the people, and all of the traditions, of this island is acknowledged and commemorated in an appropriate and respectful manner," the Taoiseach said.
