Former minister for foreign affairs Mr David Andrews TD is understood to have received an undisclosed sum under a settlement of his libel action against the Irish Mirror.

The action arose out of a report in the newspaper on January 6th, 1999, about a visit Mr Andrews had made to the Caribbean when he was a minister.

A jury was sworn in by Mr Justice Barr yesterday to hear the action but, after out-of-court discussions between lawyers representing the two sides, it was announced that the libel claim had been settled. Mr Andrews was at the High Court for consultations with his legal team.

The terms of settlement were not opened in court but it is understood that a clarification will be published in the newspaper.
