An Post has said it has no information on claims by a property developer that he was able to pay the former politician Mr Liam Lawlor to have the address of a new housing estate changed from Clondalkin, Dublin 22, to Lucan, Co Dublin.

The company has set up an investigation into the allegations which were undated but which are understood to refer to early 1996.

Mr Seamus Ross, a director of Menolly Homes, told the Mahon Tribunal on Wednesday he had paid Mr Lawlor £40,000 (€52,000) to have his Earlsfort development changed from a Clondalkin, Dublin 22, address to Lucan, Co Dublin. The difference was about £5,000 (€7,000) per house in valuation terms and netted the property developer more than €3 million.

However, An Post yesterday issued a short statement and noted it had been co-operating with the Mahon Tribunal on the tribunal's investigations into the issue. The statement cast no light on the claims by Mr Ross.
