A man who had been living in his car since August last year has been housed in a transitional housing project and promised the next vacant unit of accommodation in his area by Dublin City Council.

Ms Des Hirsch (58), who was interviewed in The Irish Times yesterday, had been living in his black Mazda on Clontarf seafront for the past 14 months.

He lost his job as a bakery sales manager when he was diagnosed with probable epilepsy three years ago and could no longer drive.

He then lost his rented accommodation when the landlord decided to sell the house, giving him two weeks' notice.

Following publication of yesterday's article Mr Hirsch's local TD, Mr Ivor Callely, contacted Dublin City Council and he has been promised long-term housing "as soon as possible".

In the meantime, Mr Hirsch said yesterday evening he was "flabbergasted" at the response to his situation.

"I am standing here surrounded by my stuff in a very nice bedroom, in a nice place where I'll get three meals a day and a promise that I'll be permanently housed within the next few months. It has been amazing."

Though he had been applying for numerous jobs he had had problems because of his medical condition, his age and his housing situation.

"My plan now is to get my life back in order. I'll have to take a few days to get my breath back and get used to this," he added.
