A 14-YEAR-OLD boy yesterday secured €300,000 in settlement of a High Court claim for alleged medical negligence in which his shoulder was damaged at birth.

Daniel James O’Connell, suing by his mother Valerie O’Connell, of Straboe, Portlaoise, Laois, brought the action against the Midland Health Board (now the HSE) and consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist John Conway arising out of the circumstances of his birth at Portlaoise General Hospital on March 23, 1995.

The settlement was without admission of liability.

Pádraig McCartan SC, for the teenager, said the child had been left with a shortened arm and had incurred a significant injury to his left shoulder.

The parents were happy with the terms of settlement, counsel said.
