Leeds striker Alan Smith has pleaded with fans to understand if he is forced to leave Elland Road in the summer.

The England striker is expected to leave if Leeds are relegated from the Barclaycard Premiership for the sake of his international career.

But the Rothwell-born player, who has been with Leeds throughout his career, has asked supporters to sympathise with his plight if he leaves.

"Your support for me has been brilliant and that is what makes it hard," he told an audience at a club dinner. "I would love to score goals for Leeds United in the years ahead but it is a difficult time for everybody.

"I hope everyone understands if I have to leave. While I am here I will always give 100%. Everyone knows that."
