Allied Irish Bank (AIB) has refunded customers €260,000 (£181,700 sterling) that it wrongly charged on credit card accounts, it was confirmed today.

The Financial Regulator said AIB is paying back 3,700 clients after it found they had been mistakenly charged stamp duty.

The error was uncovered by bank officials as they went through records of fees and involved tax costs applied to accounts when customers were not living in Ireland.

AIB has apologised to its customers.
