The Taoiseach and the British Prime Minister, Mr Blair, are to speak on the telephone today to discuss the British government's handling of the legislation covering police reform in the North.

Earlier this week senior Government sources accused the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Mr Peter Mandleson, of handling the RUC Policing Bill in a shabby manner and said it had angered the Government.

A telephone call was received only hours before the legislation was to be voted on in the House of Commons on Tuesday night from British officials who said Mr Mandleson had decided to retain the RUC name in the formal title, the Police Service of Northern Ireland.

A statement was issued by the Government following Wednesday's Cabinet meeting stating that it was imperative that discussion take place urgently and that the Government had been assured by the British government this would be the case.
