The Taoiseach Mr Ahern and the British Prime Minister Mr Tony Blair held telephone talks on Northern Ireland political issues today.

During the 20-minute talks the two leaders agreed that the next meeting of the British-Irish Council would go ahead in Dublin on January 23rd.

The phone conversation followed a meeting in Dublin last night between Mr Ahern and Sinn Féin president Mr Gerry Adams.

The exchanges with Sinn Féin centred on the current controversy over the future of policing in the North.

Next Tuesday, Mr Ahern will have discussions with the SDLP in Dublin.
