Jailed loyalist terror boss Johnny Adair has launched a legal bid to the decision of the Northern Ireland Secretary Paul Murphy to have him re-arrested earlier this year.

His lawyers have appealed against the dismissal of his application for a judicial review into the decision.

The Lord Chief Justice Sir Robert Carswell had ruled that Mr Murphy acted lawfully when he revoked the UFF leader's licence.

The Northern Ireland Secretary ordered Adair to be jailed after deciding he had been involved in directing terrorism, drug dealing, extortion, money laundering and the procurement and distribution of firearms.

The grounds of the appeal include an argument that the Lord Chief Justice was wrong to conclude that revoking Adair's licence without him having been questioned or interviewed was not in breach of his human rights.

During Adair's incarceration in Maghaberry Prison, his wife Gina, close associate John White and other supporters fled to Scotland after being forced out of his stronghold on the lower Shankill area of west Belfast.

Their removal followed the murder of South East Antrim UDA leader John Gregg, which was blamed on member's of Adair's faction.

Last week, his notorious "C" Company was renamed the Shankill UDA as the terror group's leadership announced a 12- month ceasefire and a ban on drug dealing among its members.
