The Southern Regional Fisheries Board is "gravely concerned" about the quality of the water at the River Triogue in the midlands after the seventh fish kill there in 10 years.

More than 50 dead trout were found by fisheries officials in a stretch of river downstream of Portlaoise, close to the confluence of the Triogue with the Barrow. Officials believe the true toll to be closer to 100 fish. The river was rated Q2 (seriously polluted) by the Environmental Protection Agency two years ago.
