Large sections of a state forest at Moygownagh, Ballina, Co Mayo, were destroyed by fire last evening. The outbreak spread rapidly through the plantation and over 50 acres of young and mature trees was destroyed. The firemen said the undergrowth was like matchwood.

Fire units were also out all day at gorse fires in Easkey, Co Sligo, and Lisaniska, Ballina.
