Mr Michael Burke (42), the national organiser of the 32-County Sovereignty Movement, has appeared in court charged with running an illegal lottery to raise funds.

Mr Burke, unemployed, a father of three, denies promoting the lottery without a licence in Cork between February and August last year.

Also charged were Mr Liam Fitzgerald of St Michael's Road, Farranree; Mr Patrick Lavin of Blarney Street, Cork, and Ms Bernice O'Callaghan of Knocknaheeney, Cork.

Judge Joseph Mangan adjourned the case until today.
