Lagos - At least 35,000 people have fled their homes in central Nigeria to escape ethnic killing, according to an initial assessment of two of four camps set up for displaced in one state, the Red Cross said yesterday.

"We have had an initial assessment that puts the numbers at 25,000 in the camp at Daudu and 10,000 in the grounds of the primary school at Uikpam," both north of Benue State capital Makurdi, Red Cross spokesman Patrick Bawa said.
