Around 300 demonstrators staged an anti-war protest today outside Shannon Airport against the use of the airport for the landing and re-fuelling of US military aircraft.

The event was orchestrated by a group called the Grassroots Network, made up of associated political and community groups.

Among the demonstrators was Labour TD Michael D. Higgins.

There was tight police security for protest, but no incidents were reported.

Two months ago, 10 arrests were made during a similar demonstration, when the airport's perimeter fence was damaged.
