300 Monaghan Poultry workers laid off

Three hundred workers at Monaghan Poultry have been laid off temporarily today.

Three hundred workers at Monaghan Poultry have been laid off temporarily today.

The move comes following last week's decision by the Department of Agriculture to suspend the company’s license to operate which led to a halt in production.

A meeting was held this evening at Monaghan Urban District Council, where workers and local politicians discussed possible solutions to the current crisis.

Council Chairman Mr John Clerkin said that the meeting was extremely positive, but that discussions have to get underway in order to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

"We know what’s needed," said Mr Clerkin, adding that the important thing was that the people concerned got their jobs back as soon as possible.

Three local TDs are meeting with Monaghan Poultry management and SIPTU representatives this evening to address the issue.

Mr Clerkin said he expected movement on the issue within a matter of days. "I’m confident that something good will come out of the next few days," he said.
