The retired executive who handed over a large political contribution to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Ray Burke, last night made no comment on Mr Burke's statement.

Mr Burke said Mr James Gogarty handed him £30,000 on behalf of a company, Joseph Murphy Structural Engineers Ltd, during the 1989 general election campaign.

A short statement was issued yesterday on Mr Gogarty's behalf by Mr Kevin Neary, of Donnelly, Neary, Donnelly solicitors in Newry, Co Down. The statement read:

"Several months ago Mr Gogarty gave an undertaking to An Garda Sioch ana not to make any public statements until Garda investigations into a number of matters are completed. In those circumstances Mr Gogarty has no further comment to make."

Mr Neary is acting for Mr Gogarty in relation to matters connected with Mr Burke's statement.

A woman who answered the door at Mr Gogarty's home in Dublin said he would be making no comment.

A woman at the Ashbourne, Co Meath, home of Mr Michael Bailey, the builder who introduced Mr Gogarty to Mr Burke, said Mr Bailey was away on holiday and would not be back until the end of September.
