3,000 Garda checkpoints at weekend

More than 3,000 Garda checkpoints will be mounted over the bank holiday weekend in addition to speed checks

More than 3,000 Garda checkpoints will be mounted over the bank holiday weekend in addition to speed checks. Gardai say the operation is aimed at preventing deaths and injuries on the roads. Nine people died and 151 were injured over last year's October bank holiday weekend and gardai say they hope to reduce the figures this year.

Motorists are advised to drive carefully within speed limits and to wear seat belts at all times.

The National Safety Council is also appealing to people to take care on the roads, especially as winter time begins this weekend, which means it will become darker earlier.

The Dublin City Marathon will cause traffic disruption on Bank Holiday Monday, but its early start means the congestion should be cleared by late afternoon.
