Istanbul - Turkish police yesterday detained 20 people from a group of protesters demonstrating against the death of two prisoners who died during a hunger strike.

Bulent Coban and Adil Kaplan were among about 1,000 prisoners who had been on a hunger strike for months against the government's introduction of high-security jails.

Turkey has repeatedly pledged to improve its poor human rights record since winning EU candidacy in late 1999.
