Gardai believe the death of a woman who was found with head injuries in Summerhill in Dublin early yesterday may have been the result of a hit-and-run accident.

Ms Joanne McDonald, in her mid-30s, of nearby Markievicz House, was found lying on the in-bound lane of the street at 5 a.m. She was taken to the Mater Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

A Garda spokesman said they were keeping an open mind, but it appeared the woman could have been a victim of a hit-and-run accident, possibly by a lorry or truck. They have appealed to witnesses to contact them at Fitzgibbon Street Garda station.

On Sunday night, a woman who had been walking with her husband drowned after she fell into the Royal Canal at Cross Guns Bridge, Phibsboro, Dublin. She was named last night as Ms Mary Graham (48), of Geraldine Street.
