The Government has announced an aid package worth £2.7 million to go towards what the UN has described as "forgotten emergencies" over seas.

The grants were announced by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, with responsibility for overseas development assistance, Ms Liz O'Donnell.

Funding will go to Afghanistan, where war has displaced more than 2.5 million people, and to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where there are over one million displaced people and 250,000 refugees.

Other nations to benefit will include Rwanda, Burundi, Ethiopia, Somalia, Tajikistan, Bosnia, Central America, and Congo-Brazzaville.
