Industrial diamond manufacturer De Beers has announced that 128 jobs are to go at their plant in Shannon.

The announcement was made today by management at the plant, which said it was looking for 128 redundancies among its employees.

SIPTU's Shannon Branch Secretary Mr Tony Kelly said the announcement had stunned the workers in De Beers and said it represented a major setback for Shannon and the Mid West region.

He said the union would meet with management to examine the impact of this decision on the Shannon site.

Mr Kelly said: "Our priority now is to seek our members' views so that we can negotiate the best possible outcome for all of them."
