US wireless security firm Harris Corporation is to close its operations in Cork with the loss of 119 jobs.
The company, which employs 69 permanent and 50 part-time staff, is to close in June next year. The decision follows a strategic review by the company which started in August.
The facility is based at Ballytrasna, Little Island, outside Cork city. A spokesman said the reason for the closure was the level of duplication that exists with its manufacturing operations in the US.
A redundancy package has been agreed and an outplacement company is assisting the workforce in securing alternative employment.
Fine Gael Cork South-Central deputy Simon Coveney said the news was “devastating for all involved”.
“The confirmation at Harris is part of a broader jobs crisis in Ireland. There are 430,000 people on the Live Register yet the Fianna Fáil Government has failed to take any concerted action to address the unemployment crisis.”
