A chronic heroin addict who took part in a series of armed bank robberies involving up to £70,000 has been jailed for 10 years by Judge Elizabeth Dunne at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. Kenneth Byrne (26), of St Teresa's Gardens, Rialto, pleaded guilty to the crimes which were committed from February to July 1998.

Byrne is currently serving six years and three years imposed by Trim and Tullamore Circuit Courts for similar offences. He had 31 previous convictions since 1986.
