London - Archaeologists were yesterday trying to uncover the secrets of a 1,600-year-old woman after her coffin was exhumed from its London resting place. The lead casket dating from the fourth century AD was opened on Wednesday night by experts hoping to find the remains of a Roman governor - but instead they found the remains of a wealthy young woman in her 20s.
The stone sarcophagus containing the remains, discovered in the historic Spitalfields market quarter close to the City, was being examined in a special chamber at the Museum of London.
