Almost 1,500 sheep carcasses are to be dug up after blood started leaking to the surface of a burial site in Wales.

The carcasses were buried at a farm in Buttington Hall near Welshpool.

The sheep were killed after an outbreak of the disease was confirmed at the farm.

Officials are now considering whether to burn the carcasses, line the burial pit and re-bury them or send them for rendering.

A Welsh Assembly spokeswoman said: "One thousand four hundred and seventy six sheep are being dug up because of a leakage of blood.

"The initial decision to bury was taken after advice from all relevant agencies. The leakage is reported as being confined to the surface of the burial site.

"A number of options is being considered and assessed. Once a decision is taken all agencies and the local community will be informed on what is to happen."
