Ever since Oprah Winfrey enthused about its slimming properties, the Yummie Tummie has been described as the new shapewear sensation.

It’s basically a T-shirt with a cotton knit bust and hip panels and a central microfibre panel that irons out the bumps and makes the wearer “visibly slim and smooth”, its makers claim. Though all the yummie tummies are long, they come in various colours and shapes from conventional T-shirts to styles called tank, strappy, boyfriend, Freedom T, bareback and Lady Leopard. I tried one out recently and it certainly smoothes the shape, though it doesn’t really disguise spare tyres and it was a bit of a struggle taking it off. Formerly only available online from the US, Brown Thomas is due to stock the range. This slip-style costs €104.
