WITH CONCERNS growing over the number of unlicensed scrapyards in operation, a new website, scrapmycar.ie, has been created to help motorists legally dispose of their cars.
All registered owners of vehicles are obliged to dispose of their vehicle through an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF) and the new website offers free disposal of the vehicle and a free nationwide collection service.
Simply complete the nationwide pick-up form online and the operators say they will will ensure that your vehicle is disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner at no cost to the final owner and with no negative impact on the environment.
"We depollute and recycle all makes and models of cars in any condition, and issue the owner with a Department of Transport Certificate of Destruction as proof of scrappage," says scrapmycar.ie's Paul Devlin.
“Some motorists don’t seem to know that if you don’t get a Certificate of Destruction when your car is scrapped you are still legally responsible for that car.
“That means if the car is put back on the road or the numberplates are cloned you are ultimately responsible,” he says. “Our drivers will issue a CoD on the spot, and once the vehicles details are double checked against the documents at their yard, a copy is sent for deregistration at Shannon. The copy we give you is all the proof you need that the car is no longer on the road, and all your legal responsibilities are discharged by your possession of the CoD.”
