What was your first machine?

1984, Honda rebel 450 cc. I loved it. You never see the 450s around anymore. They were the perfect starter bike and could handle speeds without sounding like a light aircraft, yet were forgiving enough not to take off from under you if you got the clutch/acceleration wrong.

What attracted you to it, and indeed motorbikes?

A friend was selling it and looking for a quick decision. I liked the "Harley-esk" look of it (apologies to all Harley owners). So, I guess it picked me - I wasn't even looking for a bike. Then, the real advantages and joys of having a bike came: Traffic, parking, sunny days, great new people.

How much did it cost?

£2,050 including lock and jacket - I drove a hard bargain. Nothing like buying something when you don't really need it. I sold it 18 months later for £2500. Kept the jacket.

What is your current bike?

Suzuki 650SV. A very different machine. I switched from cruiser to racer while I was still young enough to risk it.

The Ideal?

BOTH!

What did it cost?

£5,000. Blew out the back tyre on the first day (Jackson falls to Blessington road - no fun getting back from there) so real price: £5,300.

What did the insurance cost?

€400 fire and theft.

What do you use the bike for?

In Dublin - fair weather trips to work and weekend burns. In west Cork the roads are empty and its great evening and weekend fun.

How much do you spend on gear?

Leathers: £300 (a real deal-- I think the price was wrong) Helmet: £200 Boots: £200 Overall it really pays to look around.

What is your next bike likely to be?

Suzuki GSX-R750. nicknamed 'the Bank Job'. Need I say more?

What's been your longest journey on the bike?

Dublin - Cork. I moved down to Cork in January and postponed moving the bike until the summer - awaiting good weather. What a joke.
