A classic racing car museum is set to open near Drogheda later this month, at the suitably classical location of Beaulieu House.

It's the brainchild of Gabriel de Freitas, whose racing name is Gabriel Konig, and her partner, Malcolm Clark.

The house and museum are 5km downstream from Drogheda, on the northern side of the Boyne estuary.

The new museum will have seven cars on display initially, including a 1970 Blydenstein Vauxhall HC Viva, which was the sister car to Gerry Marshall's "Old Nail" championship winning car.

Other cars will include a 1967 Vauxhall HB Viva GT; a 1965 Austin A40 Farina and a 1963 Farina, as well as a 1971 Austin Mini Cooper S, a 1967 MG Midget and a 1995 Silva Stryker, a former racing car now used as an auto test car.

Guest cars and racing motor bikes will also be on display.

Also on show will be the spare Lotus 904 engine for the Blydenstein.

Only 25 of these engines were made. The museum will also have racing documentation, press cuttings, photographs and programmes. Much of the material has been collected by Gabriel de Freitas herself, from her days as an ace racing driver.

She was one of the top Irish women racing drivers in the late 1960s and early 1970s, racing in such countries as Brazil, Denmark, Germany and Italy. Her best year was 1969, when she won 18 races.

Gabriel de Freitas still does some racing in Europe, in cars prepared by her partner Malcolm Clark, whose own collection of autotest and road cars forms part of the exhibits.

The new museum is due to be opened on September 27th by 1960s rallying superstar Rosemary Smith.

Beaulieu House was built by an ancestor of de Freitas, Sir Henry Titchbourne, between 1660 and 1666, in the Dutch style, and it's been in the same family ever since.

De Freitas hopes that interest in the new museum by motor clubs will help keep the museum going and she has already received a lot of calls.

In addition, adults can have a tour of the house, the gardens and the museum all for €15 a head.

De Freitas says that the location is excellent, too. If club members want to tour in the area, places like the Cooley peninsula and Boyne Valley are ideal, she considers.
